THE WALK TO MARICH 2009

More great news................ following the unanimous backing of the Stalham High School Student Council, the new Headteacher, Ms Derry, has rubber stamped a repeat of last year's Sponsored Walk.

The 2nd Walk to Marich will be held on Friday 26th June 2009.

It is hoped that the combined distance of all walkers will equal the distance, as the crow flies, from Stalham to Marich in West Pokot, Kenya - a distance of a little over 4000 miles.

Marich has been the focus of Stalham High School's fundraising efforts over the last 18 months. During this period we have been supporting the construction of the Marich Early Development and Primary School. We will also be visiting Marich during two field trips to Kenya during 2009.

Details of the Walk are to follow.................. watch this space or should that be BLOG!?!?!?

Great News

Firstly.......... it is not too late to apply for financial support.

On Saturday 13th December 2008, I listed 2 organizations that may, subject to making application and status, assist with the funding of the trip to Kenya.

Application to the Norfolk Youth Fund is made direct by the applicant but that to SPRET has to have a letter of support from the Headteacher at Stalham High School. If you decide to apply for funding from SPRET, please request a letter in support of your application from Ms. M. Derry at the school.

In addition, I can see no reason why anyone, from either of the trips cannot apply.

The links to both organisations on the original post can be foundfound by clicking here NYF and SPRETT

If you don't apply, you don't get! It's as simple as that! What have you got to lose?

Secondly we have just had confirmation of flights for the second trip and these are being held subject to the completion of a booking form and the payment of a deposit.

A Close Call in Tarangire National Park, Tanzania - October 2004

A bit of fun in the Tarangire National Park in Tanzania in October 2004. The elephant decided to have a little bit of fun in order to protect its family.

Makes me laugh especially the commentary............... didn't know that elephants could understand English. It was quite happy to back off until Rob decided to hypothesise that the Elephant was more scared of us than we were of of it. It was then that the elephant in question decided to make a point and prove Rob wrong.

Survival International

Maybe only loosely connected but just came across this...................

Survival international is the only international organization supporting tribal peoples worldwide. Check out the website.

The Pokot people may not fit in with the tribes for whom this project was established but they do represent a lot of what Survival stands for. The Pokot need as much of our help as others do and it is for this reason that we are trying to raise awareness of West Pokot, the people and their need for education, medical care and, in general, our support to benefit their lives.

On the subject of Survival International and how I was made aware of them, they have recently become the beneficiary of an album entitled Bruce Parry presents Amazon Tribe - Songs for Survival. This contains songs especially written for the project by some of the music world's biggest names. It is also enthusiastically supported by Bruce Parry of the BBC Series' TRIBE and AMAZON.

Checkit out in iTunes, at HMV or on Survival International's website

Happy New Year

Just wishing you a Happy New Year..................

................ Hasn't the last year gone by so rapidly. It only seems like yesterday that I first proposed the forthcoming trip to Kenya and now there are two, the first is just round the corner and, yes, we can now say............. we're off to Kenya this year!

Talking of the years passing with such speed, here is a video condensing a year into a mere 40 seconds. Might just try something like this when we are in Kenya albeit for a much shorter period of time.

The YouTube link is ONE YEAR in 40 SECONDS, just click HERE.
Here it can be seen in all its glory, in full size and, by clicking on the relevant link (just below the video, can be seen in HD. You can even download it from VIMEO in HD! or HERE.

Don't know whether this is any better............
