NEW BAG PACKING TOTAL: £835

We made a slight error when counting the proceeds of Saturday's Fundraising at Tesco Stalham as reported in the last BLOG entry. The amount should have been £835!! Fortunately the error was in our favour.

What a fantastic effort by all concerned................ students, parents, Tesco's staff and last, but not least, the customers who supported our efforts and of course DM (sorry, almost forgot you!).

The fundraising, it was felt, produced a lot of PR for the school and in addition, by the increase in the number of views it is apparent that some people are viewing the videos of Marich and Kenya that have been posted on YouTube.

Although there are links to the videos on YouTube on this BLOG and the videos themselves, here is a link to the most recent video to be posted on YouTube. This was put together for Africa Week at Stalham High......

TESCO BAG PACKING - £830.32

On Saturday 29th March 2009, i.e. Yesterday, a bag packing fundraising event was held in Stalham Tesco in aid of the forthcoming Stalham High School Kenya Field Trip.

Between the hours of 09:00 hrs and 17:00 hrs on various shifts, 13 students ably supported by three of their mothers packed, publicised and promoted the cause...................... oh and a couple of staff pitched up to hinder the proceedings.

The total raised was an absolutely, amazing, outstanding £830.32.

Thanks go to Amy, Beth, Charlie, Christopher, Connor, Cubitt, Eric, Jamie, Maria, Penny, Richard, Tayla, William and Angie J, Christina C, Tina C as well as Duncan M for all their efforts.

Don't forget that there will be a repeat performance next Saturday at the same time. So, if you haven't already played your part PLEASE make the effort next Saturday and support the cause.

Money raised will go towards the trip.

REMEMBER, if you DON'T contribute you WON'T benefit!

COUNTDOWN TO KENYA

The departure date looms................... a little over 9 weeks to go!

'Work' continues behind the scenes in order to achieve our aims of offering and providing a life changing experience which all the participants will hold as treasured memories for years to come.

My only hope is that there are no hiccoughs, hold ups, bureaucratic interventions, changes or upsets between now and when we go............................. fingers crossed!!!

All the necessary paperwork should be completed and submitted no later than Monday 30th March 2009. This is includes a copy of the participant's passport. Without these the student will be prevented from going............... NOT my rules!

Letters will be sent out this week, from school, to parents who have not submitted the necessary forms etc. together with the blank forms that are required.

Please also ensure that all vaccinations and inoculations are completed before our departure and the student is aware of the importance of taking Anti-malarials at a set time each day. May I suggest that all students take their tablets at the same time each day............... 19:00 hrs, so that we can instruct and monitor the taking of the tablets whilst in Kenya in order to minimise the chance of contracting Malaria.

Finally, it is important that everything detailed on the equipment list is carried and. as such, parents should be starting to bag up these items and tick them off the checklist as they are bagged! Further copies of the checklist are available from Mr. H.

Last, but not least, a number of parents commented that they had never received a copy of the Kenya Information Pack for Parents which I thought was given out to all students last year. If you have not had a copy, please accept my apologies for this oversight. Most of the details from this pack can be found on the BLOG but if you require a hardcopy, once again please contact Mr. H and I'll make arrangements to get one to you.

MySpace - ELLIOT MINOR

I know that this has little to do, if anything, with the trip to Kenya but since the school's community has supported the various appeals to raise funds for the school in Marich, it is the least I can do to support their appeal.

It works like this............

If you are a member of MySpace then click on this link http://www.myspace.com/schoolinvasions and sign in to your account and then VOTE, VOTE, VOTE for STALHAM HIGH SCHOOL.

If you are not a member of MySpace then click on this link http://www.myspace.com/schoolinvasions and register with MySpace and then VOTE, VOTE, VOTE for STALHAM HIGH SCHOOL.

WE NEED ALL OF YOUR VOTES! EVERY VOTE COUNTS!

So, if you read this, wherever you may live, please VOTE for STALHAM HIGH SCHOOL.

IT IS AS SIMPLE AS THAT!

IF WE RECEIVE THE MOST VOTES THEN the BAND ELLIOT MINOR WILL PLAY AT THE SCHOOL!

Fortunately I live 32 miles from the school and if we win, I will be out of earshot! Only Joking!

Great News!

The numbers for the first trip have increased to 30 with the sudden interest of one more student who we welcome on board!

There are still a couple of places left in order to fill the minibuses but the closing date MUST BE this coming Friday i.e. 27th February 2009. If anyone is interested, please contact Mr. H as soon as possible.

In addition we have been told that the donation from the STALHAM SHOPPER, the proceeds from their Christmas Raffle, is £700. This is an outstanding sum which we, all of those going to Kenya in May, are most grateful to receive and personally, I am overwhelmed by the support that the Stalham Shopper has shown us.

Thank you to our newest recruit and thank you to Nigel and his staff at the Stalham Shopper.

Lastly, the draw for the Africa Week Raffle has been made and the list of prizewinners has been posted on the notice-board in the MFL Dept. and will also be published in this week's copy of the Stalham High School Herald. Please collect your prizes from Mr. H!

I will soon be able to publish, in a future BLOG entry, the total amount raised during Africa Week 2009.

DON'T PANIC!!

Before the rumours get out of control and before any irate parents hear those rumours, YES, the cost of the trip HAS increased by £1,000. However, that is £1,000 for the trip in total, NOT £1,000 per student. Therefore it is about £30 per student.

PANIC OVER and RUMOUR SPREADING CONTROLLED!

Credit Crunch

Sitting back, just enjoying the thought of being south of the Equator, in Kenya, in a little over 13 weeks and it suddenly struck me.....................

The pound has lost about one third of its value in relation to the US Dollar and about the same in relation to the Kenyan Shilling. When I first proposed this trip the £:US$ rate was about 1:2 and the Pound:KSh rate was about 1:135................. now they are 1:1.40 & 1:105 respectively.

The bottom line is that the EXTRAS that were budgeted for will now cost an extra £1,000!

Therefore we need to do something to fundraise the difference.

Don't forget the upcoming packing sessions at Tesco Stalham. The first is on Saturday 28th March and the second is on Saturday 4th April.

PUT THESE DATES IN YOUR DIARIES.................... it would be nice to think that we could claw back a considerable proportion of the 'LOSS', if not ALL of it! Therefore we need at least 10 people for each shift.
